Your webshow will give the producer a more comprehensive picture of you as a good performer. It seems like whatever music Brittany Spears touches, it turns to gold…or platinum (if we’re talking about albums and singles). But, like Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera, this former Mickey Mouse Club star hasn’t always had it easy. After numerous number one albums and songs, Brittany Spears appeared to crack under the fame and pressure, shaving her head in public, having her children taken out of her care and undergoing court-ordered treatment. Luckily, she took a step away from showbiz for awhile, and with the conservatorship of her father, she got her personal life back on track. Since then she’s released several more albums, each featuring number one singles.

Here are a few ways to get started as a child singer:

Join a choir

Joining a choir is a great way to hone your singing ability as part of a group. You will have the opportunity to learn about music, scales and harmonization, and you’ll be given the chance to practice and perform on a regular basis. Being part of a choir is also a great way to discover your strengths and weaknesses as a singer, enhancing your strengths and working on your weaknesses within the relative safety of a larger group. As you develop your skills, you may even be asked to perform solos or work as part of a smaller singing group.

There are lots of choirs you could join as a child – schools, churches and city arts programs often sponsor children’s choirs, so ask your parents to help you find a reputable choir within your area.

Take singing lessons

When you learn an instrument, one of the best ways to learn is to take lessons, and it’s no different when you want to become a singer. Think of your voice as an instrument. Just because it’s a part of you, doesn’t mean you automatically know how to use it to the best of your ability. Singing instructors can give you specific, one-on-one instruction designed to help you hone and manipulate your voice. Even singers with a vast amount of natural talent can benefit from singing lessons because instructors know how to push a singer’s talents even farther.

Look for opportunities to perform

Being a child singer requires much more than simply singing. You have to be able to perform in front of a crowd, and in some cases, you may need to play an instrument, dance or engage the crowd at the same time. If you’ve ever watched American Idol or The Voice, you know that singers who are comfortable performing are the ones who usually go the farthest. So, sign up for talent shows and offer to sing at retirement homes every chance you get. And, record your performances. You can watch them back and identify areas of improvement which will only serve to take your skill to the next level.

Send out demos

When you feel you’re truly ready, post a few videos of yourself singing online and start sending out demo tapes to recording studios. It’s a rough business that’s filled with rejection, so prepare yourself for a few “no’s,” but don’t let that stop you from trying.

Rebecca Black

Rebecca Black’s “Friday” music video and song was released on YouTube and iTunes in February 2011, and it went “viral” in March, just a month later. While most of the attention was negative, there’s no denying that the media has been good for Rebecca Black’s career. Not only did she shoot to infamy overnight, she’s performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, hosted MTV’s first online awards show and appeared in a Katy Perry music video.

Adele

Adele wasn’t planning on becoming a singing sensation. In fact, she intended to work on the other side of the business, helping launch other people’s careers. But, fate had something else in store. After recording a demo as part of a school project, her friend posted the demo to MySpace where it became a huge hit. It was only a matter of time before a music label reached out to her and signed her as a solo artist, and the rest is history.

Justin Bieber

It’s hard to believe that Justin Bieber has only been on the music scene for about three years. It was in 2008 that Scooter Braun found Bieber’s video clips on YouTube and arranged a meeting between Bieber and Usher. With Usher’s support, Bieber was signed to Raymond Braun Media Group and a recording contract with Island Records. Justin Bieber’s YouTube start led to the release of his first album in 2009, which quickly went platinum in the United States.

Lily Allen

This UK alternative pop singer didn’t get her first recording contract until after launching her career on the popular social media website, MySpace. Like other artists who earned their following online, Lily’s fame rose quickly, and her first mainstream single “Smile” rose to the top of the UK Singles Chart by July of 2006. In addition to releasing two popular albums, the singer now owns a fashion rental shop with her sister and has launched her own record label.

After Clarissa Explains It All was cancelled, she landed the leading role in Sabrina, The Teenage Witch, a show that ran for eight seasons. Not sure you’ve seen her in anything? Nick Cannon

Their candid interaction was real, which resonated with their viewers. The show may be fictional, but being yourself is an important part of achieving success online. You have something to offer that no one else has – your personality, your sense of humor, your view of the world. When you embrace what you have to offer, the world’s more likely to embrace it as well.

Team up

Miranda Cosgrove’s character, Carly Shay, may be the star of iCarly, but she wouldn’t have a show without help from her friends! You probably have a lot of great ideas of your own, but chances are your friends have some great ideas, too. Team up and use one another’s talents to maximize the potential of your webshow. If you have a friend who’s a great artist, see if she’ll help create sets for your show. If you have a friend who’s a great singer or musician, see if he’ll perform or play background music. You want your show to be high-quality and full of great content, and it’ll be a whole lot easier to succeed if you have supportive and talented friends surrounding you.

Engage your audience

You want to be more than a one-hit-wonder, and to keep your audience coming back for more, it’s important that you engage them in the process. If you’re posting your videos on a venue where viewers can leave comments, be sure to ask questions, request feedback and tell people to share your posts. Try New Things

Just because most people focus on a single instrument, doesn’t mean you have to, too. This same principle applies across performance skill sets as well. You may not be able to enlist in band, theater and choir at school, but you could take band at school, join your church’s choir and sign up for the community theater program during the summer. Not only will trying new things expand your talent and abilities, it will also help you figure out what types of performance you enjoy the most.

Think Outside the Box

Performing and singing on stage may be your ultimate goal, but sometimes the best way to make yourself stand out from the crowd is to develop a skill in a niche field that not many people try. For instance, you may want to take a class in ventriloquism, set design or African dance. Chances are most of your friends will be focused on more “popular” forms of performance art, so developing these outside-the-box skills will give you an edge when trying out for roles.

Take it to the Stage

It’s one thing to take lessons and try new things, it’s another to get on stage and perform. Young actors, singers and dancers should perform every chance they can get. Join local talent shows, sing in front of friends and family, record yourself and make short films or video clips to post online. Don’t just perform the skills you’re most confident about, perform them all! If you don’t actually take the time to get real performances under your belt, you’ll never be able to identify areas that need improvement. The real triple threats are those actors who can fearlessly perform a number of skills at the drop of a hat.

Develop social graces

When you’re just starting out, it doesn’t matter how talented you are, if you have bad manners, are disrespectful or arrogant, you’re going to rub people the wrong way and could hurt your chances of landing a role. Learn proper etiquette and always remember to say “please,” “thank you,” and to acknowledge the efforts that others have gone to to help you achieve your goals. This may seem like it should be a minor factor, but in today’s world, you’d be surprised how far a good attitude and good manners can take you.

It’s always better to put together a web show about the things you know than to putt together a web show about popular subjects you don’t know much about. Using the examples above, consider the following video clip ideas:

If you’ve read a lot of books on sharks, you could put together an educational series on the most dangerous sharks, or how to avoid getting bitten when swimming in the ocean.
If you spent the summer performing, you could put together a series on how to project your voice from the stage or you could choose your favorite monologue to reenact for film.
If you spend your free time singing, you could put together a series on memorizing lyrics or how to choose music to suit your voice’s pitch.

The possibilities are practically endless! Who do you know? There are all sorts of ways to put together a web show, and it takes a little pressure off if you can include other people in your videos. If you know a local celebrity, like a sportscaster or weather girl, ask if they’d be willing to sit in on an interview. If you have friends who enjoy acting and performing, consider putting together a “Young Actors Talent Show” that showcases everyone’s best work. You’ll have fun working together to produce the clips before editing them with entertaining background music. Where can you go? There’s no law saying you have to film your video clips inside, and every community has interesting landmarks to showcase. Do a little research to discover interesting facts about your city, then plan a web show around your discoveries. A girl or boy with the talent and drive to come up with something so educational will definitely impress internet viewers.
